Web 1.0 to 2.0 in Small Bytes

An Instructional Course for Boreham Library Staff on Technology That Can Be Done At Your Own Desk

a Little at a Time....

[version 20070817a]

If you don’t like change, you’re going to like irrelevance even less.

– General Eric Shinseki, 34th Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army, 1999-2003.

"Library 2.0 simply means making your library's space (virtual and physical) more interactive, collaborative, and driven by community needs." -- Sarah Houghton-Jan

"Library 2.0 is, perhaps above all else, the idea of constant change. Not only constant library change, but the recognition that our communities are constantly changing and that our services to them must change proportionately." -- Michael Casey

* First, remember the convention here: the * asterisk indicates something specific for you to do.

* If you are going to use IE6 to view this page, then whenever you come to a link, right-click on it and select Open in New Window so that you can still get back to the wiki page easily.  If you are using IE7, then set it to open each link in a new tab.

* If you are using Firefox, then be sure you have the Tab Mix Plus add-on set to open a new tab from all the options possible.  Use the Tools menu, select Tab Mix Plus Options, and on the Tab Opening tab, select all the entries under Open Tabs From.

* You are able to make comments!  Tell me and everyone what works, what doesn't, what isn't clear enough, what the best parts of articles are, and how you like this method of learning on your own.

Oh, yeah... you want more graphics, like screenshots.  Sorry, but we have a limited amount of free space here before we have to start paying for it.  If I use a lot of graphics (Screenshots, etc.) here then we'll eat that free space up too quickly.  I'll try to be very clear and only use screenshots when absolutely unavoidable (I may use some from other servers, so it might take extra time to load -- bear with it, please.).

I WILL BE ADDING NEW TUTORIALS TO THIS AS TIME PERMITS.  I will send out notices when I put up a new one.  After that, it will be up to you to visit and see what's new.

Readings on Library 2.0

Readings are NOT optional.  Skim them, at least.  They will give you a better idea of what we're talking about.

Have you noticed that we continue to be the first academic library in the state to put some things into action? (The things that don't cost extra money, anyway!).   Maybe because we're busy Turning "No" into "Yes" while others are still in committee.  Let's keep it up!

An overall view of Online Social Networks, Virtual Communities, Enterprises, and Information Professionals (part 1).  "More Americans have used the Internet to reach out to an online group than have used it to read news, search for health guidance, or buy something, according to a Pew Internet & American Life Report."

Let's see an example of what Library 2.0 is about, at UW-Madison's Wendt Library Blog .

SECTION 1: Basic Computer Stuff

Picks up the little bits of important information which we all need to have, and may have missed training everybody on.

Please at least scan through each of these as they are added.  You might pick up a tip or two, even if you believe you're already familiar with what's being discussed.
