You must be a Facebook member and logged in to search Facebook.
If we do want to try it, the Facebook Librarian application can be added to a Facebook page to allow a lot of links like WorldCat and our own Ask a Librarian and other features. Frankly, it's still a work in progress and not that impressive at this point, but the programmers admit that.
GroupsFacebook has Groups which you can join.
For example: stupid librarians that jump counters & roundkick 8yr olds in the face and several others along the "anti" line. (There's a LOT of hostility out there... and places like these allow it to come out.)
But there are also some practical ones, some regional ones, and even some fun ones (Tattooed Librarians, Dennis on Facebook
Yes, I'm on Facebook. Turns out several faculty are (Dan Breitenberg and I are on each other's friends list). Turns out my niece and nephew are on there, too, and Connell.
The catch is, you have to register with Facebook to see it, or have somebody who's on it show it to you. On the other hand, it cuts down on the weirdness in a few categories (but not all of them!) by limiting it to .edu email addresses... but now that they opened up to students without .edu addresses (high school, jr. high), a lot of them are getting on there. These will be students here soon -- and they will be used to using Facebook.
I ran a search on "Van Arsdale" and turned up a LOT of them on there.
To be honest, while this shows us connecting with students, and it's good to have a presence, it's of limited use right now. We should keep an eye on here for developments, including ways to pull people to our regular web site. Drafts
