What if my Power Point presentation won't open in "My Courses" within Lions Link?

If you're using Internet Explorer, right click the file name, "save target as" to desktop,

and the file will open.

Why isn't the "spell check" showing up when I type a document now in Microsoft Word?

Microsoft Office 2007 is installed on most library PCs. The spell check feature is

not enabled by default. Go to the File menu (big round icon in the upper left corner), then Word Options,

Proofing, and Contextual Spelling (check box). Now you should see the familiar lines under misspelled words.

I'm typing a document in Word 2007, but the person I'm sending it to can't open it. Is there something else I can do in this situation?

When you have finished typing your document, and are about to save it, you'll see that the File extension in Word 2007 is .docx. Go to "Save as type", and choose "Word 97-2003". Now you'll have the good 'ol .doc extension. :-)

I don't have Power Point on my home PC, and my instructor has posted 5 presentations for me to view. Help!

Go to the Circulation Desk and check out the CD of software downloads provided by the Boreham Library. It includes a Power Point viewer.

How can I print a PowerPoint presentation embedded within a Word document?

Left click on the title of the presentation; you will see a border around it. Right click, go to Presentation Object, and Open. Now you should see the available print options.

I need a Group Code for Refworks. Can you help me find it?

Go to the Library homepage at http://www.uafortsmith.edu/Library/Index.  Click on Create Works Cited. Click on Login, Registration, Guides, and Tutorials. Under the heading, Can I connect to Refworks from Home?, click on the Look Up link. Type in your usual username and password. You will be taken to a secure page with all journal and database-specific usernames and passwords. This includes the Refworks Group Code.

ScienceDirect isn't working for me. Why can't I access the full-text article I need?

Most likely this is not a result of technical difficulties. The Boreham Library subscription might not include the journal you are trying to access. Notice the "full-text available" green icon and the "non-subscribed" white icon to the left of the screen. If there is a white icon next to the article you would like, why not order it via Interlibrary Loan?

I have an xml file that is zipped, and I am supposed to open it through my online course. Can you help me?

Try switching browsers first; it may be that this will solve the problem. Alternatively, select the file you would like to download. You will then be asked if you would like to open the file or save it. Choose to save. When the "Save as" windows pop up, click the down arrow next to "Save as type". Select "All File types".

Next to "File name" leave the file name as is and highlight the extension. With the extension highlighted, type ".doc". Click save. Now the file should be able to be opened in Microsoft Word.

May I make a transparency at the Boreham Library?

We have some transparencies on hand, and they are of no cost to the student. They will not work in a copier. However, if you bring up a file (i.e., a Word document) on one of the end computers in the Pebley Center, library staff will help you manually feed a transparency into that printer.

My PowerPoint presentation worked just fine from home, but now that I've copied it over to the network, the video and sound files won't work. What should I do?

PowerPoint only embeds sound files under 100KB and only those in WAV format.  It will only link to all other sound files.  It does not embed any video files.  This is PowerPoint's way of keeping file sizes manageable.

Try using the Office button, go to Publish, and use the Package for CD feature.  Another option: from the Office button, go to PowerPoint Options, Advanced, and Save.
